Sustained is a series that emerged from an impulsive, trial-and-error process that gradually evolved into a cohesive body of work. Originating from the Wake Up series, which includes approximately fifty sketches, Meikle used these studies as a foundation for further exploration. Through translating sketch into paint, each composition began to reveal a sustained moment—one in which the application of material reached a natural equilibrium.
Rather than striving toward completion, the works arrived at a state of resolution on their own. The paintings no longer required further intervention; they existed fully in their own balance. In this way, Sustained reflects a broader meditation on process, suggesting that stability and meaning are often discovered within the act of making itself, rather than solely in the final result.
